Friday afternoon Dale and I were working at the NPSOT booth at the Wildflower Center plant sale. We observed very noticeable waves of monarchs (and other butterflies as well--moving too fast for us to
identify) moving south off and on during the afternoon. There was a nice breeze from the north so I guess they came in on the wind? A few of them seemed to stop and nectar but most of them did not; perhaps they had already done some nectaring in other areas of the WC (we were on the south side), but it really didn't seem like it--but not sure. It looked like most of them were already up pretty high and flying high--not like when they are hanging around sniffing out plants. I guess it sort of surprised me. I would have thought the WC would have been a good rest stop!
A couple of people commented to us that they had seen lots of butterflies (different varieties including some very small ones) moving south in the downtown areas yesterday afternoon--even in the middle of lots of traffic.
