We planted two plots of Red Emperor tulips. Four bulbs were planted in an area where the ground temperature is closer to the ambient temperature. It is away from the house on a small flat rise near the driveway. We had to clear to grass from the area to plant. Also, the roots from a very large maple tree nearby had to be avoided or dug up when we planted.
The second plot is nearer the house where the ground temperature recorded at 2PM one day was 20 degrees higher (84 degrees) than the high temperature that day (61 degrees).
We predict the bulbs near the house will emerge from the ground faster than the ones away from the house.
