Monarchs have been making their way southwest along the coast of the central Jersey shore during the last few weeks. Daily, while driving home along the ocean from work, I had been seeing at least a dozen or so monarchs heading inland (which in this case is west) around 4pm in the afternoon. Seaside goldenrod is still in bloom along the beaches. This past week the volume of monarchs has decreased to approximately 2-6 during the 20 mile drive home. The temps have been in the 60's to low 70's. Monarchs remain in my yard in Long Branch, NJ, although this past week we have been seeing fewer and fewer as the butterfly bushes, asters, tithonia and goldenrod are dying out. But, the tropical milkweed is still going strong! I have found 4th instar larva in the tropical milkweed garden up through this weekend (17 total last week). I did find 3 eggs a week ago, and they hatched out on the 18th!
