Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 10/21/2006

Number: 1

monarchs have been sighted on a regular basis all up and down the central coast for the last month, from Santa Cruz to Pismo Beach. The largest gatherings are places that have large eucalyptus groves, which seem to be a favored as roosting sites. On our class outings at San Simeon State Park, near Cambria, California, we see monarchs daily, especially around the seasonal wetlands that are hosts to abundant milk weeds. Even though there are not thousands roosting at san simeon, its obvious that they like the location. The temperatures along the central coast have been in the mid 60's F to high 70's of late. Last week it actually hit 82 deg. F in Cambria and San Luis Obispo.
