Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 11/02/2006

Number: 1

Nov 2: Early morning temp was 52 dF, lowest this fall. Early morning count just before 11:10 am was averaging 8 per minute. Between 11:10 and 11:14, 107 monarchs came past me ... my guess was they were in nearby trees and had warmed up enough to want to fly. Later I counted for ten minutes from 12:40 to 12:50 and had 37 came past my point. These are very good numbers for the midcoast of Texas in early November but not unheard of. The warmest it got was 61 dF, we had a N wind blowing 20 to 25 mph, clear. Nov 3: North wind continued ... good numbers early. Observed about 200 thru binocs nectaring on lantana and goldenrod. Netted a male monarch that had been tagged in Whitehouse, Ohio 40 days and 1,146 miles earlier. Wind turned to E after noon and flow of monarchs shut down.
