Signs of Fall

Date: 11/18/2006

Number: 1

Waves of robins arrived a bit early this year on Nov 18--surprising because of the warm fall we have been experiencing. They are up to their usual antics, mobbing in toyon, cotoneaster, and pyrocanthus bushes, gobbling 2-3 berries and fluttering off to the next branch. Last week (12/6) I noticed the bushes full of migrating cedar waxwings. I don't know how they convinced the much bigger robins to yield to them, but they took first priority in the most heavily berried bushes, with robins hanging out around the periphery. The waxwings gone now, and the robins are back, but their numbers are thinning as the berries do.
