Wildlife habitat is replacing turf at Mt. Vernon ES in an area next to the school now known as "Mustang Meadows." Small sections within the garden have been designated for different uses. One area that is complete is our Prairie Garden that features native grasses. As we remove the existing turf, we are planting shrubs and flowers to feed and offer cover to local wildlife. We also stock supplemental feeders for birds and set up two birdbaths as a temporary water source until we can install a recirculating bubbler. We do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We have collected wooden pallets to make a compost bin this winter to make our own organic amendments. We collect rain from one of the downspouts and re-direct it to a bog garden. We began the project in the Fall of 2004, and it continues to be a work in progress. We are registering now since a few of the smaller areas are relatively complete.
