We were to plant on January 2, 2007, however, we had a few set backs. The garden area had been neglected for so long, the ground was rock hard. We had to use a pick axe and a tiller with many shovels to turn the soil. We added some compost and lined the garden with planks to prepare for a cement border. The principal asked us to go home when it started getting dark for safety sake. The next two days, I was extremely ill and missed school, so when I returned on Friday, we continued the planting after school. The students spread newspaper across the soil we tilled to help with weeds. We waited for a truckload of topsoil to get delivered and then spread it out over the garden to lift it up to almost the top of the wooden planks. We then planted the bulbs in the center section before sunset. The Special Ed Life Skills class is helping us out as well. We can already tell we will need to figure out the watering.
