We were very surprised when our Red Emperor tulips emerged during mid-winter. But until now the daily temperatures have been unseasonably warm. One day in January the temperature was above 70 deg. On other days, temperatures were in the 60s. We have two plots. One plot near the house warms up above ambient temperature and the 2 tulips we planted are about 3 inches and 1-1/2 inches respectively above ground! You can see the red of the flower surrounded by green leaves. At the other plot, where the ground is about at ambient temperature, only 1 out of 4 tulips we planted emerged (3/4 inches above ground). The others bulbs hopefully are safe underground. We will mulch the plants soon to protect them.
