Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 01/28/2007

Number: 1

The weather was clear and cold for here-around -1-0C (32F). Saturday(same weather as yesterday) I heard them for the first time while lying in bed but did not get up to look. The robin crew were doing the “Zeeup” call both on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday morning I heard them again then around 7:30 8 of them arrived on our back lawn that was covered in frost. Along with the group of robins came 1 dozen starlings, a couple dozen small wrens and two flickers. All were busy pecking into the lawn, a movie set could not have arranged the choreography like the birds did in that impromptu gathering . They all flew off to the next property doing the same thing after “grazing for 8 minutes. Oh yes, two gray squirrels were performing on the back fence the whole time. We were fascinated because we have never seen such a gathering in the 23 years we have been living on this wooded property. Also, this sighting was one of the earliest we can remember. Usually I expect to see them around the 12th of February. .We live about 5 miles west up the Cowichan Valley from Duncan. Today (Januaray 29) was also the first time I saw robins at our school grounds again early in the morning before the frost had melted on open ground at the edge of the forest and also on the grassed playing fields.
