Monarch Adult Sighted

Date: 02/12/2007

Number: 1

The Monarchs are still here despite the cold weather we have had. I learned that Monarchs make their chrysalis near the ground during cold weather. I had several attach to a Dianthis and weeds about 3 inches from the ground; they normally attach themselves 3' or higher. They have hatched; 1 hatched just before the temp. dropped into the 40s for several days. It clung under an Angel Trumpet leaf until the temp. got back up into the 50s. It then said, "Good bye!" and flew out of my yard. I currently have 1 larvae eating butterfly weed. The temp. will drop again this week. I hope it will drop for the last time this winter. My flowers are not blooming well because of the low temperatures. How does that affect the butterflies?
