Robin (WAVE seen)

Date: 02/20/2007

Number: 1

The flock I saw was not only the first flock I've seen this winter/spring, but the first robin sighting. (I am an avid birder, wildlife rehabilitator and former endangered species biologist.) There were approximately 10-12 robins. They were moving, not feeding. We have 3 fresh feet of snow on the ground which is the first significant snowfall we have had this winter! It has been so mild here. (I've seen a kingfisher feeding from a covered bridge that I go over every morning on my way to work . It was there every day until mid January when we got our first below zero temps. I've NEVER seen a kingfisher here that late...) Anyway, yesterday the high temp was in the low 30's. That's the warmest it's been in the past 2 weeks. It was so interesting to see the group of robins, plus a group of bluebirds of about the same size flock AND a large flock of snow buntings (about 30) moving across the same meadow!

We have a robin who returns to the same nest site on the side of our barn every spring. He sings his heart out the moment he arrives. I'll let you know the minute he (or any others) begin singing on territory! We've put up several new nesting ledges, so I'm hoping for more nests I can monitor.
