Saw our first Red-winged Blackbirds in the backyard today. About twenty had stopped to partake of a seedcake that we had put out this week. The red in their shoulder chevrons are getting pretty vivid. Many early spring arrivals are showing up ... we were told Purple Martins, not just the scouts, were trying to get into their houses this past week. We have been hearing about many hummingbirds over the internet and it could be more than those that overwintered, so we may have to put out a couple of "test" feeders to see what shows up. We had a hard freeze (24 dF) this past week but it should warm all the way to the low 80's by Thursday ... almost spring along the Texas midcoast. As soon as the fields dry a bit more, the farmers are ready to plant corn ... Feb 14th to 20th is the normal planting time if the ground is warm enough and it has been dry enough for them to get into the fields.
