Hummingbird, Rufous (FIRST)

Date: 01/22/2007

Number: 1

The Rufous male hummingbird left my yard about 11 AM on Sunday. At that time
the sun was shining and Austin was warming up. The little hummer amazed me.
He showed up late the day before. The weather was in the thirties in and it
was raining lightly. From what I saw, the hummer was excellent shape even
though Austin had been shut down from Monday through Wednesday by ice,
sleet, and snow and all the flowers and my feeder had been covered with a
sheet of ice. The shrimp plants around here seem to have frozen, but the
fragrant honeysuckles are blooming after all the January rains. Small flying
bugs appeared available for hunting; the hummer actively perch hunted.
