Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/06/2007

Number: 1

I was about five miles west of Port Lavaca, out in the corn fields, and had a monarch appear ahead of me, low over the farm road.
I had been driving slowly and creeped up behind it, got to follow for awhile ... it stayed close to the shoulder and over the pavement and I got to within 3 ft to see that it was faded. It finally went out across the barditch as if looking for milkweed and was still doing a "serpentine" flight as I lost it flying out across a brown coastal bermuda pasture. We've seen spring, summer, and fall A. viridis along this stretch of road and in this bermuda patch. I didn't see it stop once ... if it was a female, it may have to hunt as much as I have been doing ... wish I could have followed it. This is a mile from where I found viridis sprouts last week. The monarch stayed between north and northeast but never seemed in a hurry. If its not coming out of Mexico, it could be a coastal moving up from Port Aransas, Rockport, or Corpus.
