All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 03/07/2007

Number: 1

Hordes of grackles, redwings, starlings and cowbirds visit the yard every day, each day the flock grows as they wait for winter to loosen its grip further to the north. They come for the food I now scatter(trying to keep seed in the feeders is hopeless)all around, scattering the seed gives the little birds a chance. A deicer and bubblers keep a hole open in the pond, with two heated birdbaths they have plenty to drink. This is the hardest time for wildlife, most natural foods are depleted and new sources have not yet begun to grow. With the bitter cold now upon us, their need for extra help is great.
