Habitat

Date: 03/06/2007

Number: 1

The Highland Habitat for Discovery began in August 2004 when the school's property was approved for redevelopment by the Ephrata Area School District administration through grant money, in-kind donations, and fundraising efforts.

The project's purpose is to provide a hands-on environmental learning experience for the students of Highland Elementary, as well as local citizens looking to learn more about creating an environmentally friendly landscape at home.

The Habitat is currently half an acre in size; however future plans call for expanding it to over an acre, making it one of the largest man-made schoolyard habitats in Lancaster County. Features of the project include an all-native tree, plant, and shrub garden with ID markers for over 75 species of native flora, a butterfly garden and Monarch rearing box, bluebird boxes, a bat house, and over two dozen bird feeders. The school's property is a National Wildlife Federation certified habitat and a certified Monarch Wayst
