All Other Signs of Spring

My first report of '07! Surprising to see a killdeer, a species of plover, plodding down the center line of our road at 9:30 this morning. It seemed puzzled by the high banks of snow. A bug eating species, I wonder if it packed a lunch! Odd, quizzical creatures with red eyes. They often require stakes or highway cones next to their depression nests to avoid lawnmower scrambled eggs. Odd to see a bird shape sitting sternly by a highway cone! Saves the wee hatchling puffs of fluff. This afternoon, KaChing or one of his sons, a red wing blackbird, is riding the bird block around. Bedraggled and road worn. Temps are around 54 degrees with a lot of thawing going on. The snowbanks are really high and the fields deep with snow.
