Wave after wave of robins were flying north in the Lake Champlain Valley today. They scattered from the roadside in dozens of places as we drove by. They were on bare patches of open field, on telephone wires, in trees and in bushes that lined the road.
Strong south winds blew all night last night and were exceedingly strong today. Today's temperatures were a break after the below zero temps earlier this week. It seems the robins were waiting for cold temperatures to pass and took advangate of the free ride. (The first waves usually arrive here in the first week of March.)
Imagine this: If a robin can fly 30 mph--and the wind was blowing 20 mph--these robins could move north at 50 mph.
