Red-winged Blackbird (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/13/2007

Number: 1

To add to the many reports of Red Winged Blackbirds, we saw our first today while travelling along Highway 407 from Brock Road in Pickering (43° 54' 25" N - 79° 07' 52"W)to the 401 exit in the west end. The birds were in the ditches near the highway 48 exit in the Markham area. While definitely not rare, we also counted 46 Red-tailed hawks along the same stretch of highway. In some areas there were as many as 5 hawks perched within 25 metres of each other.
