Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 03/04/2007

Number: 1

The taps are in - and the sap ran today. It is sunny and +3C. There is still snow in the forest, most of it fell within the last two weeks. We have had a very strange winter- not much snow at all, and temperatures fluctuating between very cold for two weeks at a time to above 0 for a week or so. We are waiting to see if the sap run is affected by the weather. There isn't enough sap to start the boiling down process yet, but everything is ready! We put down our tobacco ties to thank the maple tree (Ininatig) for the wonderful gift that it gives us, and we said 'chi-miigwetch'. Spring is here!
