Monarch Butterflies observed in the skies over the city of Queretaro today, heading north.

March 21, 2007
I see your scientists went into Sierra Gorda to follow the Monarchs migrating north and reported from Jalpan on the 21st. On that same day from the city of QuerĂˆtaro where I am (far west of Jalpan and on the highland plateau, not in the Sierra), very large numbers of monarchs overflew the city itself on the 21st heading straight north towards San Luis Potosi and not into the Sierra east of us. The quantities of monarchs were so large that it was impossible not to see from 5 till 10 specimens anywhere you turned during the entire day. So they seem to fan out quite soon after leaving the wintering grounds as far as I can understand this.

I have also been at Real de Catorce close to Matehuala in San Luis Potosi State during the fall migration, and also there large amounts of monarchs could be seen flying south. So your theory that they follow the mountains to the east is not exactly correct.
