Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/15/2007

Number: 1

The monarch's wings appeared to be fresh as if recently hatched. The air temperature on that day was around 65 degrees Fahrenheit. It was in flight, not on any flowers. It was flying West in my yard. I live on five acres surrounded by many trees. I have open areas in my yard and plant specific food sources for butterflies and hummingbirds. I always bring out my hummingbird feeders when the azalea's begin to bloom because this is the time we always have hummers returning. The day after I observed the monarch I noticed a Ruby-Throated Hummingbird feeding on the feeders. I was surprised to see the monarch. Just today I saw a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly with perfect wings. I leave my deciduous tree leaves on the ground for cover for the local butterflies during the Winter. I have been observing many butterflies coming out and flying around for about a week.
