A colleague visiting her parents who live in Guanajuato, Guanajuato Mexico sent me the following reports:
March 13-16; Noticed few to no monarchs moving through the city
March 17; late in afternoon, watched for over 30 minutes and saw more than 100. Never more than 2 in field of view at a time but every minute or so another would fly by, stopping to rest on a pepper tree and then again heading north.
March 18; Am watching a steady stream of monarchs. Monarchs in larger groups and flying higher-- in the right direction.
Guanajuato is about a day's drive from the monarch overwintering areas of Michoacan; it is the state just north of Michoacan.
