Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/19/2007

Number: 1

We were on Monday in Acambaro, drove by the Zinapecuaro-Contepect highway, then we went to San Juan del Rio trough Acambaro, Jerecuaro and Coroneo Guanajuato, and finally by Amealco to Edomex. We found monarchs flying in this last route, all the time to the north.

Reported by Mexican field biologists Ivan Limón and Raúl Zubieta who are following the butterflies migrating northward. "We hope to find the migratory path and see what species of flowers the butterflies are nectaring on along their route to Texas, and whether they are seeking water holes along the way," says Dr. Lincoln Brower who is advising the trip along with Dr. Isabel Ramirez of UNAM.

Note: These are not "first" sightings with any certainty, but we are including them here as an important record of spring monarch migration sightings in northern Mexico.
