Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/24/2007

Number: 1

3/24/07 - Found our first monarch larva today! A newborn first instar (less than 2mm) long on an Asclepias viridis plant.

3/26/07 - Today I had the chance to make an inventory of the milkweed patches on about 2 acres of mostly native grassland (used as a horse pasture off and on). The results were: 129 individual milkweed plants with 1 or more monarch eggs attached, 159 eggs (about 6 ready to open), and 9 first instar caterpillars. Most plants had 1 egg, 22 plants had 2 eggs, and 4 plants had 3 eggs. While outside this morning (for approx. 90 min.) I observed 5 monarchs: 3 flying and 2 faded females actively egg-laying. Today is overcast and 75 degrees F.
