Saturday 6-8pm saw 40-50 monarchs going to roost in large live oak trees on the eastside of Killeen.
Courtesy of Mike Quinn, Texas Parks and Wildlife Division. As I reported earlier, most of the Texas spring monarch reports
(including these roost reports) are coming in from along the IH-35
corridor. There are at least two possible reasons for this concentration
of sightings, 1) that's where a high percentage of the state's observers
are and 2) this is where the Blackland Prairie Ecoregion lays. I suspect
the latter reason is more significant because during the larger fall
migration the reports of the highest density of monarch generally don't
overlap with the highest density of observer locations...
