All Other Signs of Spring

Date: 03/28/2007

Number: 1

March 27 2007. The phoebes have returned to the farm, another welcome sign of spring in Madoc Ontario. I am always happy to hear the song of the phoebe! A pair usually nests by the back door. The weather today was beautiful- sun, clear sky, and about 14C. There are lots of flies sitting on the decks and clustering around the outside of the house, so there will be good food for the phoebes to eat! There were mosquitoes buzzing around today as well.
The big pond has water on top of it, and the ice is melting off quickly. there are a couple of pairs of Canada Geese that are claiming the big pond for their own. I heard ducks on the pond this morning as well. The sap is still running, but a couple of the trees in the hollow have started to give out cloudy sap (a sure sign that maple season is almost over). there are flying ants in the sap pails as well. If we get a frost tonight, we may still have some sap in the morning.
