I saw my first returning Monarch in my butterfly garden on 3/24/07. It looked new in that its colors were bright and it was not tattered. It spent all day laying eggs on the milkweed. One thing that was interesting is that a freeze had killed most of the milkweed and I had to cut it back and little leaves are sprouting at the bases...in the meantime I bought more milkweed plants that were much larger and planted them......the Monarch only laid eggs on the older plants with the little leaf sprouts. The next day I saw two Monarchs and then two days later I saw one again.I checked the plants and found many eggs.
