Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 03/30/2007

Number: 1

Today we witnessed a very sad event.
A male Ruby-throated Hummingbird ran into the cafeteria window of Farney Elementary.
A teacher went outside, picked him up, and gently put him in a basket. He was breathing very rapidly, but eyes closed and not moving. Three hours later his eyes opened and he began to sit up just a little.
Still protected in a soft basket lined with tissue paper we kept him in a quiet shady spot when another hour later, without warning, he flew away onto a tree branch. After sitting in a tree for fifteen minutes, he flew away!
A happy ending!
We have decided that our fourth graders who witnessed the accident, will make decorations to tape to the inside of the windows in an attempt to prevent accidents with birds in the future.
