Earthworm (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/04/2007

Number: 1

I was out in the rain today walking along the streets in town - and the sidewalks are covered in worms. IT has been raining since yesterday morning and the ground is very wet and muddy. I also have a new 'family' of red wrigglers in a worm composter that I am setting up to show my university students how easy it is to keep pets (and to make soil for your garden at the same time)... did you know that 15 years ago I set up a worm composter in my grade 5 classroom- and it was a great hit with the children... we even had a small salamander living in the composter all winter long - we created quite the food chain! Our worm buddies munched out on banana peels and apple cores, and the salamander didn't have far to go to find a meal either... what a great science lesson!
