Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/01/2007

Number: 1

Earlier this week one of my colleagues, Rudolf J, a person well acquainted with monarchs, reported seeing a monarch at his home - about a half mile from Monarch Watch - on Sunday 1 April.

My personal earliest record is the 7th of April and typically monarchs are not seen here until the 14th or so. This monarch could have survived the low temps of the last several nights but almost certainly would have died this morning. The low this morning was 19F and a similar low is predicted for tomorrow. It looks like the swamp milkweed survived but the tips of the emerging A. verticillata appear to be damaged and the garden in general appears to have taken a big hit. I've been watching 5 viceroy caterpillars in the garden. The only one I found this morning didn't look too good.
