Today I monitored the milkweed at my place near Bergheim. The temp was 40dF at 12:15 PM. I checked 41 plants (A. asperula) and found 17 live eggs and 2 dead eggs. The plants were in good shape and showed signs compatible with the munching of 1st and 2nd instars.
I found 3 larvae, a 2nd stage and 2 - 3rd stages. They looked dead, especially one of the 3rd stages which I found on a milkweed flower. It was lima bean green in color with visible black stripes and faint whitish stripes. I picked it up and put it in the palm of my hand. I planned to take it inside and warm it up, making sure that it was dead. After 3 to 4 minutes in the palm of my hand, it started moving. I put it back on its milkweed.
