On Thursday, April 12, just before noon I saw a Monarch in Guilford County as I was driving slowly along a rural dirt road just north of Greensboro, NC. The butterfly flew across in front of my car, settled briefly on the grass to my right, and then moved on in a north-westerly direction. I didn't see any nectar sources in the immediate vicinity. This is the earliest
that I have ever seen a Monarch in the county. I wasn't on a butterfly expedition, but I also saw 6 Eastern Tiger Swallowtails, 2 Clouded/Orange Sulphurs, and 1 Cabbage White in the area. It was about 70 degrees, sunny, and there was a brisk wind blowing.
