Saw a common loon sitting in the middle of the road at 4:30 p.m. It could run and flap its wings, but did not fly. I covered it with a coat, picked it up and transferred it to a wire dog crate. A wildlife biologist told me the loon was probably land bound and needed a large body of water, smaller than a backyard pond, in order to launch (fly). I released it at Lake Siskiyou. It flew off after swimming and diving for about 40 minutes.
