Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/20/2007

Number: 1

3 monarchs in the garden today....1F and 2M. All 3 had very battered looking wings. F was laying eggs and Ms patrolling.

I have had butterflies in the garden laying eggs all year round. There was burst of egg laying in February 2007 and the cats nearly picked my milkweeds clean by start of March. The eggs laying slowed down round mid March 2007 but has picked up again in the past week. I've picked up 35 cats this week. I'd have more but don't have the heart to kill the wasps that live around my yard.

Is Plant City (25 miles east of Tampa Florida) an overwintering site for the Monarchs? Do my young butterflies that emerge in the late winter/early spring fly north during the Spring migration or do they stay just in Florida?

Thanks,
