Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 03/31/2007

Number: 1

Each year the five kindergarten classes at Early Primary raise monarchs from eggs I find in milkweed patches along the roadside. This year we have the largest number of eggs and caterpillars we have ever collected. We are feeding and raising close to 200 caterpillars! Each child has his/her own caterpillar plus many "extras." The first eggs were found the last weekend of March. Most had hatched by the following Wednesday. Two weeks later, after quite a feeding frenzy and the acquisition of more eggs and tiny caterpillars in the process, we started watching the caterpillars change into their chrysalises. Now we are in the waiting stage. The children are closely observing their chrysalises to see who will have the first butterlfy. As always, the experience has provided many opportunties to observe, draw and write about what is happening.
