Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/23/2007

Number: 1

I have yet to see a monarch this spring but expect to this week (29 April).

Last Monday (23 April) the Master Gardener who maintains Monarch Waystation#1, reported seeing a fresh male monarch across town at the county fairgrounds here in Lawrence.

Given the conditions in Texas over the last 6 weeks, I expect to see large number of first generation monarchs pass through Kansas on the way northward through May and perhaps into the first week on June.

The population appears to be off to a good start this year although the production of the first generation seems to have occurred further south this year than is usually the case.

In fact, this year there should be a flood of numerous Texas bred butterflies sweeping into KS. Red admirals have been moving through the area in large numbers the last two days accompanied by a few painted ladies.
