Sadly we have not seen any Monarchs this spring. We have plenty of Swallowtails but they are local. When I asked my students why they think this is true they quickly replied it's because of all the wild fires burning south of us near the Okeefenokee Swamp and the butterflies can't get near us! The smoke travels as far north as our town of Pembroke and the children often cannot go outside to play during recess. Over 50,000 acres are burning and we have had many hazy days.Conditions are so dry that even with daily watering efforts by our students our school butterly garden is suffering. If you look at the Georgia on the map you'll see ther are no sightings reported in the southern part of the state. We are very worried about the other kids and wildlife down there and we are praying for rain!
