My children and I found a young 5th instar monarch larva on a healthy green milkweed (Asclepias viridis) plant growing in disturbed tallgrass prairie near our home. I searched 40 to 50 additional milkweed stems, but found no other signs of eggs or larvae.

We took the larva home, and are rearing it.
