While doing my daily late-afternoon survey of the Iowa State University campus for Red Admiral butterflies, I saw the first two Monarchs of the season at 7:57 p.m. They were both nectaring on a Buddleia bush, and sometimes flying up to chase each other a bit before returning to the flowers. The day was a very warm one for mid-May, with a high of 89 degrees, hazy sunshine, and strong gusty southwesterly winds. In the late afternoon it was still 83 F and a layer of overcast was moving in from the west. 42.0249 N, 93.6469 W
