This sighting is the earliest I have seen in our area in 40 years! (I don't normaly start seeing them till the last week in June!) Although the butterfly appeared in good condition, it was rather dull orange, not bright, but quite large. I followed it long enough to determine that it was female... and I assume looking for food plants... it's much too early here for egg laying, the milkweed hasn't even started to show yet! It was flying, lighting on mostly dandelions along my rural "street". I"m hoping it will find my well established native plant garden!
