Hummingbird, Ruby-throated (FIRST)

Date: 05/24/2007

Number: 1

Male spotted on branch near feeder, just sitting. Sat there for 2-3 minutes, not preening, just sitting still. Sat so long I started wondering if it was injured. Finally it went to feeder and drank and then left. Feeders had been up for 2-3 weeks. Saw another hummer the next morning. Have seen them quite a few times this week since then. Best sighting was while eating at dining room table. Hummer flew up to just a couple of inches of window and hovered for 10-15 seconds, watching US eat! This is only our second year of putting up feeders. Had 3 feeders last year, 4 this year. Used commercial "food" most of last year, then started using homemade sugarwater. Not using any red dye this year and they are still here anyway.
