Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/30/2007

Number: 1

I can't be sure my young students did in fact see monarchs. However, they are truly excited to be part of the project and keep reporting sightings. Here is what I have seen:
I have not seen a monarch at school here in the city.
But I did see a monarch on Toronto Island in the wet meadow environmentally sensitive area at the eastern end. I saw it last week. I think Wed. May 30th.
Additionally there are plenty of milkweed plants growing. I saw the first one about 6 inches high May 30th near the monarch. Now that plant is over a foot and there are lots of others. I can't tell yet if there are more or less plants than last year. Last fall the migration groups seemed more prolific on the island. The migrants really like the indigenous bamboo plant that flowers just as they migrate.
