I just returned from a trip to the Hudson Bay Lowland and, as it happens, I saw one monarch butterfly. The observation
was at the Attawapiskat airport on Monday August 1 at 9:00 a.m. The butterfly was flying with a good tail wind across the gravel aircraft parking/refuelling area.
Attawapiskat, Ontario, is a Cree village on the Attawapiskat River about 10 km upriver from its mouth on the west coast of
James Bay. The observation location is the airport there, at 55.93 N, -82.43 W.
Contributed by Mr. Don Davis for Mr. Kenneth Abraham, Waterfowl and Wetlands Scientist of Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. [Note: Date of sighting was actually Aug. 1. It is dated July 31st here for a technical reason; our spring maps only include data through July.]
