Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/31/2007

Number: 1

I saw several Monarch butterflies today. My milkweed is still rather small so I was a bit surprised to see them. Anybody have any good idea of what their usual arrival time is? I may be "off" in my perception because the weather has been so damp & cool for the past two weeks.

I also saw a few Red Admirals visiting lilac flowers today. I can't recall if this is a migrant species or not. I rather think it is, but I could be wrong. It just seems like the cool temperatures of late are hardly the sort to bring forth emerging from a chrysalis. Or is this one of those species that overwinters as an adult?
