Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 06/15/2007

Number: 1

Every year I'm always envious to hear of all the Monarchs others are seeing. In Terre Haute, IN, close to the border of Illinois in west central Indiana, I have seen two to date - one female at a local nursery and one male in my garden a few days ago. My friend in Plainfield reported caterpillars at her house 10 days ago - that's about 60 miles east of here. The reality is that despite the big numbers everyone seems to see, the typical date over the years here in Terre Haute to find eggs has been around the fourth of July. The real wave comes around the second week of August. So I try not to worry to much, and think "If you build it, they will come" - an allusion to the movie Field of Dreams, but in this case, my butterfly gardens with milkweed! Right now I have tall blooming milkweed, swamp milkweed, tuberosa, and some swamp seedlings.
