I made an early trip to PAB ( 45° 33' 39" N -
80° 30' 12" W) yesterday (June
20), returning today.
I saw my first Monarch at the cottage we rent, about
2 hours after I arrived, at 2:00PM. The owner informed me that she had
seen monarchs starting about one week earlier - that would be about
June 13. The location is an open area surrounded by forest about 2 km east of
highway 69, just south of Pointe au Baril. The soil is extremely
sandy, and the vegetation is very sparse. A few small aspen trees, a
lot of poison ivy, and a lot of milkweed.
On several occasions during the week of July 9-16 I saw hundreds of
monarchs in this open area (about 10
acres) where I go birding. Certainly there are a lot more than in
recent years.'
