Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/17/2007

Number: 1

As the conductor of a regular CPR wayfreight (train), I have a great opportunity to follow the daily and seasonal changes in the Central Alberta. I first recognized milkweed plants between Wetaskiwin and Camrose about three years ago. I believe it is Asclepias ovalifolia but you can check the photo to be sure. It is not easy to find but it can be locally common along the edges of wooded areas.

When Monarchs were first reported in Calgary I began to pay special attention, and sure enough I saw my first ever Monarch in Wetaskiwin on June 28. The following list of sightings is from the Alberta Wildlife database found at http://weaselhead.org .
