Monarch Fall Roost

Date: 08/21/2007

Number: 1

Last night there were hundreds of thousands of monarchs roosting in my trees, Ms. Cherry told reporter Valerie MacDonald of Northumberland Today. They covered trees, shrubs and filled the air. The monarchs are roosting in trees, feeding and waiting for the sun to come back and warm things up before they move on, added monarch expert Rod Parrott of Port Hope. Staging along the north shore of Lake Ontario like this is typical during fall migration. The monarchs come down from the north and often pause when they reach Lake Ontario. Depending on winds, they'll either cross the Great Lake or continue travel along the shoreline.
